Nepal: Orphanage Volunteer and Teaching Project and Cultural Understanding
In this course students work in an orphanage/care house where they assist children in their daily routine. The general role of the Ross students is to act as an older sibling to the children. Students help teach the orphans and assist with tuition of general life skills through participating in administrative chores, health education, games, and by drawing and painting with the children. IVHQ Placement: Namaste House - in central Kathmandu, an orphanage with many children and not enough staff and resources. Students also participate in the Nepal Teaching English program at a Nepali public or private school. Students assist with creating low-cost teaching materials for the school and help organize health check-ups for students.IVHQ Placement: Chitwan English School - Located in Chitwan, this school has over 350 children ranging in age from 3 - 15. Volunteers teach mainly English but also assist with a variety of other subjects. The Ross School group will be broken down into 3 – 4 smaller groups to stay in the homes of IVHQ’s experienced host families. (Encouraged but optional.) Students visit local markets, temples (Bhaktapur Durbar Square, pagoda and shikhara-style temples), holy sites (Bodhnath Stupa), the Shivapuri National Park with splendid views of the Himalayas, and the Royal Chitwan National Park (home to the Royal tiger, one horned rhino, leopard, varieties of deer, bear, wild boar, birds and more.) Students do an Elephant Safari Tracking Rhinos & Bengal Tigers.
Finally, Ross students do some of the village tours and temple visits through rafting.
